A notebook originally referred to a small booklet used for recording various matters. Before the invention of writing, humans often employed knotting on ropes to document numbers or events and convey specific meanings, thereby transmitting information. As evidenced by surviving examples from primitive societies—such as net-pattern motifs in cave paintings, rope‑impressed designs on pottery, and clay fishing weights—it is clear that knotted‑rope notation (for counting) was one of the widely used recording methods among early peoples.
