Under pressure, the clarified permeate passes through the ceramic membrane and the porous ceramic support, flowing outward perpendicular to the membrane surface, while the retentate is retained by the membrane and undergoes high‑velocity flow within the channels, generating turbulence that continuously flushes the inner surface of the membrane, removing any trace deposits adhering to the membrane and maintaining a steady effluent of clarified product. This process achieves fluid separation, concentration, and purification.

Moreover, most fermentation products are thermally unstable; exposure to high temperatures, acidic or alkaline conditions, or specific solvents can lead to denaturation and loss of activity, thereby complicating downstream extraction and purification and compromising product quality. By contrast, ceramic membranes can efficiently remove large‑molecule contaminants such as mycelia, metabolic byproducts, and bacterial debris from the fermentation broth. They offer high separation precision, yield a clear and transparent permeate, and effectively prevent product denaturation and inactivation, enabling the production of a clarified filtrate that may even be sterile. With continuous backwashing, the residual cake retains only a very low solids content, theoretically allowing for higher extraction yields than those achieved with plate‑and‑frame filtration.

Biopharmaceutical wastewater is characterized by a high pollutant load, complex composition, and often exhibits antibacterial effects, making it difficult to treat using conventional biochemical methods. The ceramic membrane bioreactor represents an innovative technology that integrates biotechnology with membrane separation for wastewater treatment, offering a novel and highly efficient process. It boasts advantages such as superior effluent quality, a small footprint, high sludge concentrations, simple operation, and ease of automation, thereby providing a reliable new approach for wastewater treatment and water resource reuse in the biopharmaceutical industry.
