A Comprehensive Overview of the Current Status and Trends in High-Performance Membrane Materials
High-performance membrane materials are the core components of next-generation, high-efficiency separation technologies. Endowed with energy-saving and environmentally friendly attributes, they constitute strategic new materials for addressing challenges in water resources, energy, and environmental protection, as well as for upgrading traditional industries. These materials have become one of the key enabling technologies underpinning areas such as environmental pollution control, energy conservation and emissions reduction, and public welfare, playing a vital role in advancing China’s national economic development, fostering technological progress, and enhancing international competitiveness.

Progress has been made in the research of membrane materials for alkaline‑system flow batteries.
Recently, the research team led by Researcher Xianfeng Li at the Energy Storage Technology Research Department of the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has made significant progress in the large-scale preparation and application of membrane materials for high-performance, low-cost alkaline redox flow batteries. By employing a continuous roll-to-roll membrane‑forming process, they have achieved the scalable production of non-fluorinated cation-exchange membranes and demonstrated their integration into alkaline redox flow battery energy storage systems.

The membrane industry is a strategic high‑tech sector in China. During the 12th Five-Year Plan period, it was designated as a key priority for national industrial development and received focused support, owing to its dual positioning as both an energy‑saving and environmentally friendly industry and a leading segment of the new materials sector. In the 13th Five-Year Plan period, policy guidance explicitly identified high‑performance separation membrane materials as a critical strategic material, further elevating their importance and spurring rapid growth in the membrane industry. Looking ahead to the 14th Five-Year Plan, with membrane technologies now relatively mature and China’s efforts to harness wastewater resources still in their early stages, policy priorities remain centered on wastewater treatment and environmental protection, encouraging the membrane industry to make greater contributions to improving water‑resource efficiency.
